Gopalganj district was a subdivision of the then Faridpur district of East Bengal (now Bangladesh) during the British colonial rule. The Gopalganj district was once also known as Rajganj. The Gopalganj region was under the responsibility of Rani Rasmoni, a Zamindar of Makimpur State. She was a fisherman's daughter. During the Sepoy Mutiny, she once saved the life of an English gentleman. Later, as her reward, the British gave her the entire territory of Makimpur. Gopal was the grandson of Rani Rasmoni. It is believed that Rajganj was named Gopalganj after that Gopal.
